<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow a relay connecting unit to read the data correctly, even if the structure of the data is changed in an on-vehicle communication system where an electronic control unit transmits a message containing a plurality of data and the relay connecting unit interprets the data and performs relaying. <P>SOLUTION: The on-vehicle communication system 10 includes an electronic control unit 30 (ECU) and the relay connecting unit 20 for relaying transmission/reception of a message with the ECU 30. The relay connecting unit 10 includes: an identifier (ID) of the message containing a plurality of data received from the ECU 30; and a table 26, in which a data structure composed of the starting position and the data length of each of the plurality of data following the identifier is stored beforehand. When the data structure of a message to be transmitted is changed, each of the ECU 30 transmits a change notification message MR indicative of the changed data structure to the relay connecting unit 10.
