PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent operability from being deteriorated by delay during manual focus control and to improve the S/N characteristics. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes a function for sequentially displaying on a display device (120) image data read by imaging using an imaging element (106). The imaging apparatus includes: an operating member (109) used for inputting an instruction to drive a focus lens (101); a manual control operation detecting section (110) for determining whether the operating member is being operated or not; an exposure determining means for determining an exposure cycle; an imaging element driving section (107) for controlling reading of image data from the imaging element for each divided cycle, obtained by dividing the exposure cycle into a plurality of periods, and for each exposure cycle; and a display image update control section (112) which determines to display the image data for each divided cycle on the display device when luminance of the image data obtained in the divided cycle is equal to or higher than predetermined luminance, or not to display the image data when the luminance is lower.
