PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-based coating material that forms a coating film having excellent processability, adhesiveness to a substrate, corrosion resistance and residual-film resistance and has suitability for a can lid. SOLUTION: The water-based coating material composition includes (A) an acrylic resin-modified epoxy resin and (B) 0.5-30 parts by mass based on 100 parts by mass of the resin (A) of a water-dispersible acrylic resin made up of a copolymer of a monomer that is composed of 0.1-15 mass% of a carboxy group-containing polymerizable unsaturated monomer and 85-99.9 mass% of another polymerizable monomer, has a weight-average molecular weight of ≥300,000 and a value of absorbance of ≤0.2 in a solution of 1,4-dioxane as a solvent at 1.35% mass concentration at a wavelength of 330 nm by a spectrophotometer.
