PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately clip a character waveform to accurately perform magnetic character recognition even if a magnetically reproduced waveform includes random noise or deformation of waveform. SOLUTION: The character clipping method for reading a character string by a magnetic head, generating a magnetically reproduced waveform from the character string of magnetic characters, and clipping a character waveform of each magnetic character from the magnetically reproduced waveform comprises steps of smoothing the magnetically reproduced waveform; detecting peaks of the smoothed magnetically reproduced waveform; calculating at least a first peak threshold and a second peak threshold from a plurality of peak values obtained by the peak detection; determining a first leading peak of the magnetically reproduced waveform based on the first peak threshold; detecting a second leading peak of the magnetically reproduced waveform using the second peak threshold different from the first peak threshold; comparing the first leading peak with the second leading peak to determining a true leading peak; and clipping one first character in a direction of reading the character string by the magnetic head based on the true leading peak.
