Method for reducing odor nuisance in effluent comprises determining the leading parameter hydrogen sulfide in the gas and/or liquid phase of an effluent line at at least two sites using hydrogen sulfide and/or sulfide analyzers and using the measured values for controlling the required addition amount of an effluent treatment agent. An independent claim is also included for a device for reducing the odor nuisance in effluent. Preferred Features: The potential to form hydrogen sulfide along the effluent line based on localized analysis is determined and the formation profile obtained is used to control the metering of the effluent treatment agent.
