The method involves requesting software at a central server (2) for activation, and testing whether the software is activated depending on an actual configuration of the software. An activation code for the software is calculated by the server, where the configuration is an integral part of the code. The code is encoded and transmitted to a motor vehicle (1), and the code is decoded. The configuration transmitted with the code is compared with actual configuration provided in the vehicle. The software is activated by the code, when the comparison of the actual configuration has no deviation.
