A transmitting/receiving system and a data processing method are provided to receive both of MPEG data and supplementary data and perform estimation and decoding by using a pre-defined sequence included in the supplementary data, thereby improving estimation reliability and decoding performance. A broadcasting receiver comprises an MPEG(Moving Picture Expert Group) data processor(100) and a supplementary data processor(200). The MPEG data processor comprises a demodulator(47), a comb filter(48), a channel equalizer(49), a slicer estimator(50), a phase restorer(51), a trellis decoder(52), and a first data deinterleaver(53). The supplementary data processor comprises an MPEG header removing unit(57), a null sequence removing unit(58), a second data deinterleaver(59) and a second reed Solomon decoder(60). A tuner receives first and second data transmitted from a transmitter. The demodulator demodulates the first data received in the tuner. The deinterleaver deinterleaves the first data demodulated in the demodulator. The transmitter comprises the followings. A first encoder performs first error correction encoding for the first data. |
