PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image reader whose gray balance adjustment conventionally performed only in its manufacturing process, can be performed on the market also, by equipping the reader itself with a gray balance adjusting original. SOLUTION: The color image reader has photoelectric conversion elements 6 for outputting color components of R, G, and B, analog amplification means 13, 13a, and analog-to-digital (A/D) conversion means 14, which are provided for each of R, G, and B components respectively. The image reader is equipped with a reference white board original 7 for obtaining shading data as a first reference original 7, and a gray balance adjusting original 8 for adjusting color balance as a second reference original.
