873,427. Cold separation of gas mixtures. AIR PRODUCTS Inc. Nov. 4, 1957 [May 13, 1957], No. 34347/57. Class 8(2). A gas mixture e.g., air rectification process comprises dividing incoming air at a point 301 into major and minor portions e.g., 67 : 33 ratio compressing at 302, 303 and 328 respectively, cooling the major portion in one or other paths 410, 420 of a switchable heat exchanger 409 not being traversed by counterflowing product nitrogen in such quantity, e.g., 70% of the yield as to vaporize carbon dioxide previously deposited therein, absorbing the carbon dioxide content of the minor portion of compressed air in a chamber 330, cooling in a non-switchable path 334 of a heat exchanger 333 in countercurrent to the remainder of the product nitrogen traversing a path 340 and in countercurrent to produce oxygen traversing a path 343 ; the so cooled portions of air being .fed through a duct 314 to the high pressure section of the column. Further cooling of the minor air portion is obtained by passing high pressure nitrogen, through a path 346, expanding at 348 and adding the expanded nitrogen to the low pressure nitrogen traversing path 340.
