The invention relates to a method for constructing a wooden spiral staircase between a ceiling opening and a floor beneath the ceiling opening. The method comprises the steps of aligning a plan drawing 20 of a spiral staircase 1 on the floor beneath a ceiling opening 22, mounting a plurality of stanchions 25 between the floor and ceiling in two spaced-apart curved arrays 30 and 32 according to the drawing 20, following the curvature of the staircase 1, forming laminated wooden strings 3 and 4 about the stanchions 25, and then mounting tread panels 6 between the strings 3 and 4 to form a spiral staircase 1. After removal of the stanchions 25 a banister is mounted on the staircase 1.
