840,207. Mercury switches. TELEFUNKEN G.m.b.H. July 31, 1958 [Aug. 9, 1957], No. 24694/58. Class 38 (5). A mercury switch suitable for operation by remote control in high-frequency apparatus, comprises a cylindrical glass body 1 having chambers 2, 12, containing inert gas at or above atmospheric pressure, and connected by a tube 3 in which lies a mercury column 8 normally contacting an electrode 9. Expansion of the gas in chamber 2 produced by energization of a wire heater 4, causes the mercury to bridge electrodes 9, 10, the gas pressure in chamber 12 resetting the mercury column when the heater 4 is de-energized. Electrode 10 together with a glass thread 11 prevents mercury from being jolted from the tube 3. A radiant-heatreflecting coating 7 reduces delay in switch closure. In a modification (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) the coating 7 is replaced by a heat-conducting clamping collar surrounding the chamber 2 portion of the body 1. The use of a number of such switches in a radio duplex system is also described (Fig. 2, not shown). |
