<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device with which uniform and high contrast is obtained even when seen from various directions. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is equipped with: a pair of polarizers comprising a polarizer A and a polarizer B; a vertical alignment mode liquid crystal cell placed between the pair of polarizers; and 1/4 λ retardation plates which are respectively arranged between the liquid crystal cell and the polarizer A and between the liquid crystal cell and the polarizer B, and of which the Nz value represented by formula (1): Nz=(nx-nz)/(nx-ny) is more than 2.0, wherein an in-plane slow axis of the 1/4 λ retardation plate is in a positional relation in which it forms an angle of nearly 45° with a transmission axis of the polarizer in the proximity thereof, and in at least one position of between the polarizer A and the 1/4 λ retardation plate in the proximity thereof, and between the polarizer B and the 1/4 λ retardation plate in the proximity thereof, an optically anisotropic body which is comprised of a material layer with a negative intrinsic birefringence value, and which is in a positional relation in which its in-plane slow axis is nearly parallel, or nearly perpendicular, to an absorption axis of the polarizer in the proximity thereof, is provided. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
