PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently execute file relocation in a global file system. SOLUTION: A metadata server machine 30 for area management determines whether a file is fragmented or not when any of node machines 20-50 inquires about metadata with a file access (steps S105-S108). If it is fragmented, the metadata server machine 30 for area management registers information regarding the file in a fragmented-file information management table 73 (a step S109). If volume addition is instructed from an operator in parallel with the registration operation (steps S201, S202), the metadata server machine 30 for area management successively moves files whose information is registered in the fragmented-file information management table 73, from an existing disk to a disk to be added (steps S211, S309, and S401-S403).
