In a cigarette packer (18), groups (15) of single cigarettes (16) are first assembled by a formation unit (1.9) and placed in trays (35) carried by a conveyor (22), then directed in succession along a set feed path (F), advancing sideways-on, toward a wrapping unit (20) by which each one is enveloped in a transparent or at least partly transparent wrapper (14); during the transfer from the formation unit (19) to the wrapping unit (20), the trays (35) are directed past a print unit (44) stationed along the feed path, by which at least one graphic element (46a) such as lettering or a logo is impressed on at least one cigarette (16) making up each group (15).
