PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To materialize a pixel mixing function and to facilitate setting and change of a group of pixels to be mixed during designing the group. SOLUTION: Each pixel 20 of a solid-state imaging element has a photodiode 51, a floating diffusion 54, a transfer transistor 55, a pixel amplifier 58, a reset transistor 59 and a selection transistor 60. The floating diffusions 54 of pixels adjacent to each other in a vertical direction are electrically connected through a vertical direction FD connection switch 61V about all pixels 20 in the entire area of an effective pixel area of the solid-state imaging device. Signal charges generated by the respective pixels 20 can be read from all of the pixels 20 without mixing the signal charges with each other by turning off all the vertical direction FD connection switches 61V. The pixels 20 in which the signal charges should be mixed can be set by selecting the vertical direction FD connection switch 61V to be turned on. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
