PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antiviral agent preventing or treating human or animal viral infection, and removing infectious virus in the environment, to provide an excellently safe antiviral composition against the pathogenic virus causing human or animal infectious diseases, to provide a diet preventing or treating the human or animal viral infection, and to provide a fodder for the animal, removing the infectious virus in the environment, and preventing or treating the human or animal viral infection.

SOLUTION: The antiviral agent comprises a formic acid salt of N-methylpyridinium compound represented by general formula 1 (wherein, R1, R2, R3, R4and R5are each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, a halogen, a hydroxy group or a thiol group; X is a fatty acid ion, an inorganic acid ion, an aromatic carboxylic acid ion or a halogen) as an active ingredient.
