An apparatus and a method for storing an image through motion recognition in a portable terminal are provided to minimize keypad input, thereby simplifying storing and managing processes of the image. A movement recognition function is activated by a user(201). A portable terminal maps a corresponding command by receiving an operation about storage and cancel if the user designates the operation for storage and cancel(203,205). The portable terminal maps a corresponding command on a corresponding folder by receiving an operation which indicates each folder if the user uses folder operation recognition(207).
