PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus that has quick response performance, excellent contrast, simple structure, and excellent stability, and capable of performing stable display of a high resolution and high quality image for a long time. SOLUTION: The image display apparatus is provided which includes at least: a pair of transparent electrode layers; an optical shutter layer formed between the pair of transparent electrode layers; and a light absorption layer, and forms a reversible image, wherein the optical shutter layer is formed from a polymer dispersed liquid crystal or an element that has an electric-optical effect. The image display apparatus for monochrome display or full-color display is also provided which is the image display apparatus, wherein the light absorption layer is black or formed from at least four colors, i.e., cyan, magenta, yellow and black, and forms a matrix pattern in which the colors are regularly arranged.
