PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium and a magnetic disk unit which stably generates a clock signal and carries out correct magnetic recording for every magnetic dot. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium has the magnetic dot 11 formed discretely on a non-magnetic area 10 as a recording unit. The magnetic dot 11 has periodic zones, and the zones includes user data zones D on which magnetic recording is carried out for each magnetic dot 11 and zones which are adjacent to the user data zones D and have the same cycle as that of the user data zones. In order to generate the clock signal for synchronizing magnetic recording onto the user data zones D, each magnetic zone has a clock signal generating zone C in which a preset magnetization direction is applied to each magnetic dot beforehand.
