Disclosed is a polarizing plate for liquid crystal display devices, which is excellent in expression of optical characteristics and can be bonded to a liquid crystal cell without suffering from deterioration in the optical characteristics. Specifically disclosed is a polarizing plate for liquid crystal display devices, which is characterized by comprising a base composed of a cellulose derivative, a retardation film directly formed on the base and having a retardation layer containing the cellulose derivative and a rod-like compound having refractive anisotropy, a polarizer bonded onto the retardation layer of the retardation film and composed of a polyvinyl alcohol, and a polarizing plate protective film bonded onto the polarizer.
