A solenoid control system comprises supplying first and second solenoid operating pulses 35a, 35b, 45a, 45b to move the armature of a solenoid from a first position to a second position with a variable time interval T1, T2 between the pulses. The solenoid is arranged such that its armature is returning to the first position during the said interval. A detected operational characteristic of the system to the pulses 35, 45 is used to indicate the return condition of the solenoid to the first position. The characteristic may be an advance in the travel time of the second pulse 45b of one pair of pulses 45a, 45b compared with that of another pair of pulses 35a, 35b. The pulses are used as scanning test signals in a calibration like process to estimate the closing point of a valve to ensure that such valves can be driven with precise control. The control system can be employed with new or old and worn fuel injector valves to obtain efficient fuel delivery. The control system can further be used in fast activation valve arrangements such as: pilots for larger actuators, engine air intake and exhaust, suspension or braking valve systems. |
