1352834 Baling machines MASSEY-FERGUSON-PERKINS Ltd 2 July 1971 [16 July 1970 21 Oct 1970] 34433/70 and 50074/70 Heading B5F A hay pick-up drum or reel 5 of a baling machine 1 is driven by an endless belt or chain 14, the driving pulley or sprocket 12 of which is positioned at a higher level than its driven pulley or sprocket 11 so that when the reel is braked the increased tension occurring in the working lower run of the chain 14 raises the reel 5. The latter may be braked when its tines 10 encounter a minor ground obstruction 22 or when a reel brake band 40 is deliberately applied by the tractor driver pulling on a rope 60 to actuate a spring biased brake lever 38. When the reel 5 is raised the slack occurring in the return run of the chain 14 is taken up by a mechanism 13 comprising a snub idler sprocket 17 and a floating idler sprocket 19 mounted between a pair of spring biased pivotal arms 20. A suspension rod 30 constituting an adjustable height stop is connected between a pair of pivotal arms 8 rotatably carrying the reel 5. The rod 30 is connected to one of the arms 8 by a bolt (32, Fig. 4) which passes through a rod slot 33 so that, although resisted by a pair of spring loaded friction pads (34), it can move up and down as the reel 5 passes over ground obstructions. The rod 30 is also provided with notches 47 engageable by a pawl which is formed by one leg 48 (see also Fig. 5) of a spring biased U- shaped rod (49). The other leg (57) of the rod (49) carries a pulley (59) about which the rope 60 passes so that upon actuation of the brake band 40 the pawl is disengaged from a notch to allow the reel 5 and rod 30 to rise. An adjustable stop 60 limits upward movement. A shaft 3 taking power from the tractor drives baler knotter chains 15, 16 and the reel chain 14 via the sprocket 12. A porcelain guide 61 directs the rope 60 to the driver. |
