1416628 Vehicle cleaning apparatus TAKEUCHI TEKKO KK 22 May 1973 [25 May 1972] 24487/73 Heading B7J A vehicle cleaning apparatus comprises a pair of parallel fixed guide rails 2 arranged on opposite sides of a portal frame 1 and extending forwardly downwardly relative to the intended direction of travel of a vehicle V to be cleaned through the portal frame, a trolley 3 having an adjustable constant torque motor 6 to drive it along the rails 2, and a pair of side brush units including substantially vertical brushes 15 mounted on the trolley 3 for movement towards and away from one another transversely of the direction of vehicle travel. Each brush 15 is tiltably suspended from a respective wheeled carriage 14 which can travel along an associated one of two aligned guide tracks 11 carried on the trolley 3 and inclined downwardly towards each other transversely of the vehicle travel direction. Prior to a vehicle cleaning operation, motor 6 drives the trolley 3 along the rails 2 to the upper end thereof. The arrival of a vehicle which exerts force against the brushes 15 stops the motor 6 when its torque setting has been exceeded, so that the trolley then descends the rails 2 under gravity at a speed equalling that of vehicle movement. At the same time the brushes 15, which are initially positioned together as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, are slightly tilted by vehicle contact, thus operating switch means to start drive motors 17 which drive the carriages up the tracks 11 until further switch means are contacted. This stops the motors 17 and allows the carriages 14 to roll back to bring the brushes 15 into contact with the vehicle sides until the rear of the vehicle is reached, whereupon the constant torque of the motor 6 is adjusted to maintain the same pressure upon the vehicle surfaces when its rear is cleaned as that previously provided for the front and sides.
