In a cooling device for a current generator, especially for motor vehicles, having a fan which is arranged coaxially with respect to the generator shaft and is coupled thereto, the transmission ratio of the coupling of the fan to the generator shaft is adapted in a variable manner depending on the cooling air requirement of the current generator. In consequence, when the generator shaft is rotating at high speeds, an unnecessarily high fan speed and the unnecessarily high power consumption linked to it are avoided. In addition, the noise produced by such a fan can be reduced to the level which is absolutely necessary.
