In brief the present invention features an automatic adaptive equalizer which detects asynchronism in a demodulator (50) coupled to the equalizer and intermittently generating a reset signal (R). This signal intermittently renders a transversal filter (10) of the adaptive equalizer operative during a period in which the filter is normally rendered inoperative by a control loop (54, 56, 12) of the adaptive equalizer.
