<p>PURPOSE:To realize a domain which has a uniform molecule array through simple orientation, and to obtain fast response and high contrast by orienting at least one of two substrate surfaces in one axial direction. CONSTITUTION:The two substrate surfaces of a liquid-crystal element are oriented in one axial direction by PVA rubbing, ''Teflon'' rubbing, polyimide rubbing, silane orientation, etc. A dipole is provided vertically to the long axis of molecules and directed in the direction of an electric field. The movement of molecules when the dipole is inverted is the motion of rotation around the flank of a cone, and the stable point of electric field application is at the position parallel to the substrate. This position is shown by 2 and 3. Molecules are arrayed in one axial direction on the substrate surfaces when the uniaxial orientation by PVA rubbing, etc., is performed, but moducules distant from the substrate settle at a position 8. When a voltage is impressed, they move to positions 6 and 7, so a display with contrast depending upon the tilt angle that the material has intrinsically is made.</p> |
