PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a pilot flame monitoring method and its apparatus for surely monitoring pilot flame by photographing the pilot flame at the tip of a chimney by a monitoring camera from a remote position and image-processing the picked-up image. SOLUTION: The pilot flame monitoring method is for monitoring the pilot flame 9 when burning an inflammable gas discharged from the chimney 8 provided with a pilot burner by the pilot burner. The tip of the chimney 8 is photographed by the monitoring camera 10 through a filter 11 for interrupting the wavelength of a visible light region, the processing area of the picked-up image of the tip of the chimney photographed by the monitoring camera 10 is image-processed to extract the image of the pilot flame 9, and the burning state at the tip of the chimney is judged from the flame part image area of the image of the pilot flame 9.
