<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus and a method with which various different samples, especially samples held in a reaction container, a plate or a block having various heights or various height tolerances can be thermally treated in the same apparatus in various experiments. <P>SOLUTION: The apparatus and the method control the temperature of at least one sample. The apparatus includes at least (a) a means for holding at least one sample, (b) a means for heating and/or cooling at least one sample and (c) a means for covering at least one sample. The means for covering at least one sample comprises at least one movable contact area and a first and a second means for fixing at least the single movable contact area in at least one direction related to the sample.
