A plasma display panel drive method and a plasma display device for displaying an image with a high quality by stabilizing the initializing electric discharge. In the plasma display panel drive method, one field period is composed of sub-fields, in the initialization period of at least one sub-field, all-cell initialization for initializing all the discharge cells for displaying an image, the sub-fields are so controlled that a write operation is performed in the discharge cells or any write operation is not performed, a control is made so that there are a plurality of predetermined sub-fields during which a write operation is performed only when a write operation is performed in at least one sub-field after the all-cell initialization thereby to display gradation, an abnormal charge erasing period during which a rectangular waveform voltage is applied to scan electrodes (SC1 to SCn) is provided after the initialization period of at least one sub-field out of the predetermined sub-fields.
