PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for electrostatically charging a photoreceptor with a photosensitive film formed thereon by dip coating application method by a electrostatic charging system, and to realize the reduction of a size in the axial direction of the photoreceptor and the miniaturization of the size of the apparatus in its axial direction, without spoiling the satisfactory electrostatic charge characteristics by the contact electrostatic charging system by achieving reexamination, related to the abutting start position of the contact electrostatic charging member, with respect to the photoreceptor. SOLUTION: When the intended lifetime number of revolutions of the photoreceptor (10) is defined as A (revolutions), abrasion loss of the photosensitive film (60) per time of revolutions of the photoreceptor as B (μm), the electrostatic charging potential (absolute value) by the electrostatic charging apparatus of the photoreceptor as C (V) and the breakdown electric field intensity for the electrostatic charge voltage application time of the photoreceptor as D (V/μm), the abutting start position (P) of the contact electrostatic charging member (12) is set in a region which is above the value, at which the film thickness of the photosensitive film (60) of the photoreceptor (10) is determined from [C÷D+AxB] and below the value determined from [the average film thickness -2μm of the photosensitive film in the image forming region].
