Manually operated implements have an elongated tapered handle that provides an enhanced grip; being useful for brushes, particularly curling brushes. A slight degree of upward taper to a brush handle markedly improves its grip quality, facilitating downward force transfer to the brush head, or commensurately reducing the effort required for a predetermined sweeping effect. The tapered handle enables improved wrap of the user's finger surfaces to the shaft. Larger or smaller diameter tapered handles can be used. A four foot long handle may have a 1-1/8 inch diameter distal end tapering to a 1-inch diameter proximal end. Compound, multi-segment tapered handles can be used with or without parallel sections. A tapered handle allows the curler to grip the handle in a variety of positions, making the design useful to curlers of most physical statures, and enabling the use of various positions and techniques. The structural strength of the handles can be enhanced by the use of tapered sections; and by providing reduced wall thicknesses, it enables lower weights to be achieved in the finished product.
