PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide discharge lamp wherein light emitting efficiency is improved and color property is hardly degraded be that a discharge medium not containing mercury adheres to an inner surface of an airtight container when lighting to correct discharge arc almost linear relative to a gravity induction convection current using an acoustic resonance phenomenon, and to provide a metal halide discharge lamp system lighting this. SOLUTION: This metal halide discharge lamp MHL is provided with the translucent and fire resistant airtight container 1, a pair of electrodes 1b, and the discharge medium containing halide and rare gas and sealed in the airtight container. Mercury is not essentially sealed, and it is lit so that the discharge arc of the discharge medium is corrected in a direction of a line connecting the electrodes by using the acoustic resonance phenomenon. A relation of A/B≤0.3 is satisfied, where A (mm<SP>2</SP>) is an area where the halide sealed in the airtight container 1 adheres to the upper part of the airtight container 1 and B (mm<SP>2</SP>) is an area where it adheres to the lower part of the airtight container 1.
