PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device capable of simplifying a structure and capable of starting a discharge lamp efficiently as well as driving the discharge lamp so that vibration, noise, luminance unevenness, and deterioration of the internal electrodes may not be brought about. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device 100 is a device to control operation of a discharge lamp 200 and comprises an igniter transformer 2 which includes a core member 10 including a first and a second portions 11, 12 and a primary winding 20 and a secondary winding 30 wound around the core member 10, and a drive part 40 which moves at least one of the first and the second portions 11, 12 and establishes position relations of both. The drive part 40 moves at least one of the first and the second portions so that the spacing between the first portion 11 and the second portion 12 may be widened, after starting the discharge lamp 200.
