The image pickup unit 30 has a CMOS image pickup device 31, a T/G (Timing Generator) 32, an A/D converter 33 and a packet transformation section 34. The T/G 32 generates image signals by actuating the image pickup device 31. The A/D converter 33 converts the image signal into the image data. The packet transformation section 34 packets one frame of image data to generate packet image data. The packet transformation section 34 adds start information and line number information to the packet image data. This electronic endoscope has a Manchester coding section in a body.
