<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nonaqueous electrolyte primary battery capable of keeping high discharge voltage even under low temperature environment. <P>SOLUTION: An active material for the nonaqueous electrolyte primary battery contains a manganese nickel composite oxide represented by formula (1): Mn<SB>1-x</SB>Ni<SB>x</SB>O<SB>2-y</SB>(in the formula, 0.01≤x≤0.5; 0≤y≤0.5). The nonaqueous electrolyte primary battery contains the active material. The manganese nickel composite oxide shows discharge potential higher than that of the existing active material such as manganese dioxide and graphite fluoride. The nonaqueous electrolyte primary battery containing the manganese nickel composite oxide as a positive active material can keep discharge voltage higher than voltage required to an apparatus.
