PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a periphery-monitoring system for vehicles which is capable of displaying a photographic image of a scene in the periphery of a vehicle, by switching between wide area display and enlarged display and is capable of showing the relation between the image before switching and that after switching to a user with a light computational load and high visibility. SOLUTION: Wide-area photographic data of the scene in the periphery of the vehicle are constituted such that the data can be converted to wide-area display data for display in the same visual field on a display device and can be made into enlarged display data for display of an enlarged part of the wide-area photographic data. When switching between wide area display and enlarged display is performed on a screen of the display device, an object area corresponding to display data after switching, in display data V1 before switching, is highlighted to set a highlighted area E on the screen. The area of the highlighted area E is changed until the area of the highlighted area E becomes equal to the area of the object area on display data after switching, and then the display data after switching are displayed in the highlighted area E.
