The method involves passing flushing air through the filter elements while separating the filter elements from the flow of crude gas. The method involves flooding the filter element with nitrogen or air with reduced oxygen content before the cleaning process until the oxygen content in the region near the filter element to be cleaned lies below a critical value for ignition. An independent claim is also included for an arrangement for implementing the inventive method.
