PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical scanner using a reciprocating deflection means and an image forming apparatus with the optical scanner, the optical scanner and the image forming apparatus having increased scanning speed and being made compact. SOLUTION: The optical scanner is equipped with: a light source; a light source control means which drive-controls the light source; the reciprocating deflection means which dynamically deflects a laser beam emitted from the light source and performs reciprocating scanning within a predetermined angle range; and a detecting means which is arranged in a position on which the laser beam with which a printing area is not scanned is made incident within the predetermined angle range and detects the laser beam, and composed so that the laser beam deflected toward the vicinity of one end portion of the predetermined angle range is made incident on one end side in a reciprocating scanning direction of the printing area and the laser beam deflected toward the vicinity of the other end portion of the predetermined angle range is made incident on the detecting means. The light source control means controls the timing of emitting the modulation-driven laser beam, in each reciprocating scanning of the printing area with the laser beam, based on the timing of detecting the laser beam by the detecting means as a reference, with respect to the light source.
