PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide apoferritin free from producing host-relating components or other foreign components and having sufficiently suppressed color and to provide a method for producing the apoferritin. SOLUTION: Apoferritin free from producing host-relating components or other foreign components, and having sufficiently suppressed color and a metal content not higher than a specific level can be produced by purifying apoferritin from a ferritin-containing specimen or a culture solution of a ferritin-producing host by using a buffer solution free from metal ions and a salt free from metal ions in the presence of a chelating agent.
