A weakly gelled immobilized electrolyte, and a lead storage battery containing the weakly gelled immobilized electrolyte are provided to increase energy capacity and to prevent the deterioration of potential and the increase of electrical resistance during discharge. A weakly gelled immobilized electrolyte comprises diluted sulfuric acid; and 0.1-3 wt% of a silica particle based on the weight of the electrolyte, wherein the silica particle is a fumed silica particle. Preferably the diluted sulfuric acid has a specific gravity of 1.28-1.34.
