PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display device that prevents erroneous lighting all over a wide temperature range, and to provide a method for driving the plasma display device. SOLUTION: There is provided the method for driving the plasma display device comprising: a panel including a plurality of discharge cells having a pair of display electrodes including a scanning electrode and a sustain electrode; a temperature detection circuit for detecting an environmental temperature of the panel and outputting the detected temperature; and an APL detection circuit for detecting the APL of an image signal. In the method, an abnormal charge erasing period is provided in which a rectangular waveform voltage is applied to the scanning electrode in the period between the initialization period of at least one sub-field among a plurality of sub-fields and a write period, wherein a time for applying the rectangular waveform voltage is controlled based on the detected temperature detected by the temperature detection circuit and the APL detected by the APL detection circuit.
