According to an aspect of the invention, medical devices are provided, wh ich include a nanoparticle-derived inorganic layer disposed over a least a p ortion of structure that includes a substrate, and optionally, a therapeutic -agent-containing layer disposed over at least a portion of the substrate. I n some embodiments, the inorganic layer is a nanoporous inorganic layer. Oth er aspects of the invention comprise methods for forming such medical device .
