PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly detect an outgoing timing and an incoming timing without causing an error by providing only one detection means such as a BD sensor or the like in an optical scanner using a reciprocally turning oscillation mirror, and in an image forming apparatus which forms an image by using the optical scanner in an electrophotographic method. SOLUTION: A light guide mirror 17 for detecting the outgoing timing via the BD sensor 18 and a light guide mirror 16 for detecting the incoming timing via the BD sensor 18 are asymmetrically arranged with respect to the scanning center of a laser light L. Thus, the interval at which the BD sensor 18 detects the laser light L from the light guide mirror 17 subsequently twice when the scanning direction is switched from an incoming direction to an outgoing direction is longer than the interval at which the BD sensor 18 detects the laser light L from the light guide mirror 16 subsequently twice when the scanning direction is switched from the outgoing direction to the incoming direction.
