PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for automatically recovering an elevator in an earthquake capable of early recovering the elevator by diagnostically operating only one car at a normal diagnostic operation speed and the other cars at raised speeds at the site of a multiple car having a plurality of cars. SOLUTION: When an elevator car is stopped by an earthquake, the car is diagnostically operated at a speed slower than a normal traveling speed for diagnosing whether an abnormality is present or not. When the abnormality is absent, the car is recovered. The elevator has a plurality of cars 3a-3c having diagnostic operation speeds changeable for each car. At least one of the cars is set to a normal diagnostic operation speedαslower than the normal traveling speed.
