An improved roll is characterized in that it is subdivided into three zones at leas in the axial direction, namely two peripheral zones (A, B) and a middle zone (C) located therebetween. The peripheral zones have a metallic protective layer that is welded onto the roll base body and is provided in the form of a protective metal sheet. A flame-sprayed surface is used in the middle zone (C).
