The method involves applying braking action on one of front and rear wheels (2a-2d) of a motor vehicle irrespective of a driving stress on a brake pedal, and measuring a parameter varying according to a brake. A value of a wheel/ground adhesion coefficient is determined from a measured parameter included in a group comprising a rotational speed of the wheel, a pneumatic slip rate and hydraulic pressure in an element of a braking system. Variable-pressure is generated in calipers (3, 4) of a brake corresponding to the wheel for applying the braking action. An independent claim is also included for a system for determining an adhesion of a wheel of a motor vehicle.
