The respiration device (1) has an illumination device (13,14,15) for illuminating a display (23) and/or operating controls (24), with a control (5) for on-off switching of the illumination device, coupled to a sensor (6) providing a signal for switching on the illumination device. The sensor may be provided by a microphone or a movement sensor, e.g. an IR sensor detecting movement of a hand in the vicinity of the display and the operating controls.
