<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method suitable for an exhaust emission control device capable of easily reducing manufacturing cost by a small drive source. <P>SOLUTION: A mat is wound around a catalyst in ST04. The compression and the diameter reduction of a mat-wound body are started in ST05. A compression force F2 is measured in ST06. It is confirmed that the measured compression force F2 is not greater than an allowable compression force F1 in ST07. If a determination in ST07 is negative before an outer diameter dm reaches a reference outer diameter, a process proceeds to ST09 since there is a risk of the breakage of the catalyst. The mat or the catalyst is replaced in ST09. When it is confirmed that the diameter dm reaches the reference diameter in ST08, the compression of the mat-wound body is completed in ST10. As a result, the mat is compressed and the outer diameter of the mat-wound body is made smaller than an inner diameter of an outer tube in a stage of the mat-wound body before inserted into the outer tube. Since the mat can be easily deformed, a small drive source can be used and manufacturing cost can be easily reduced. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
