PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader for transmitting image information from a read means of reading an image of a document to a specified image decision means through a small number of wiring lines. SOLUTION: Disclosed is a scanner 113 which reads the image of the document and decides whether the read image includes a specified image. The scanner includes a rear-surface read unit 70 which reads an image on the rear surface of the document to output rear-surface image information, an image extraction unit 121 which extracts specified component information as information representing a specified component of each pixel in information representing pixel values included in the rear-surface image information, a specified image storage unit 123 which stores the specified image information 123a specifying the specified image, and a specified image decision unit 125 which decides that the document rear surface includes the specified image based upon the specified component information.
