SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR REMOTELY ACCESSING UNIVERSAL PLUG AND PLAY (UPnP) NETWORKS

A method and system are described for allowing a client application on a network to discover remote Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) devices and services on a remote network and retrieve associated content from these devices/services. In the preferred embodiment the method and system uses XM PP to encapsulate and relay UPnP protocol messages between the networks. In this embodiment a one-to-one communication channel is established between a server software object (3) installed on a home network (1) and client software (6) provided on a device (5) such as a mobile phone connected to a remote ("away") network (7). for relaying solely UPnP traffic therebetween, via an XMPP server (10). The UPnP traffic carried by the channel may be filtered so as to reduce bandwidth requirements.
